As a volunteer, you are the heartbeat of our sporting community. Your dedication and integrity help to create a safe and fair sporting environment.
With this role comes the chance to lead with purpose, uphold responsibility, foster fairness and make a lasting impact, however volunteers have roles and responsibilities.
Creating a safe and respectful environment
- Treat all children and young people with respect, honesty and fairness
- Make sure the environment is safe, welcoming and inclusive for everyone
- Talk to children about their rights and responsibilities
- Involve children in decisions and ask for their feedback
- Listen to what children and young people say.
Be a positive role model
- Set a good example – your behaviour should help create a safe and inclusive space
- Always put the safety and wellbeing of children first.
Training and education
- Complete all required training provided by your organisation
- Keep learning – there are many free online courses to help you understand child safety better
- Stay up to date with best practices in child safeguarding.
Legal and policy responsibilities
- Make sure you have the right Working with Children Check (WWCC) (or equivalent) for your state or territory.
For requirements check Australian Institute of Family Studies - Tell your organisation immediately if your WWCC status changes or if there’s a child safety matter
- Before starting, ask for a position description so you understand your role and what’s expected
- Learn and follow your organisation’s Child Safe Policies and Practices
- Always follow your organisation’s Code of Conduct
- Ensure you are aware of your local safeguarding legal obligations.
Reporting and responding
If you see or suspect that a child is being harmed or is at risk, report it immediately.
