Global DRO tells you whether a medication is banned in-competition, out-of-competition, both, or not at all. The information is based on the current World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.
Global DRO does not provide the prohibited status of pre-workouts, fat burners, or dietary supplements in general. This includes natural health products, for example: homeopathic products, traditional medicines, herbals, and probiotics.
You should be aware that supplements can vary from batch to batch. They may also contain substances that are prohibited in sport even if they are not listed on the label. If you're thinking of taking one, read our advice on supplements.
How to use Global DRO to check substances
- Check your substances on the Global DRO website.
- Choose the:
- 'User Type' (for example, athlete or medical professional)
- the 'Sport'
- 'Nation of Purchase'.
Note: Make sure you have picked the right 'Sport' and 'Nation of Purchase' to ensure correct results.
- Enter the name of the medication or ingredient.
- Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
- Get the results instantly.
Note: Many results may be listed. Ensure that the result you select matches exactly to the medication or ingredient.
- A reference number is listed at the bottom of your results page. We recommend you save this number or print out or email a copy of your results to yourself.
- To check more than one substance, enter a medication or ingredient in the ‘New Search’ box.
Keep your reference numbers
It is important you keep each reference number as proof of the searches before using a medication or substance. This may help an athlete if they need to give that information in the future.
Help! My medication is banned!
If your medication has been prescribed for a medical condition you may be able to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).
Overseas products
Drugs, medications and ingredients listed on Global DRO are only brand-name products sold in the following countries:
- Australia
- Canada
- Japan
- New Zealand
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
- United States of America
You may not find medications or substances listed on Global DRO if they are an overseas product from a country not listed here.
You may not find them if you are searching by a generic name or by the list of ingredients. Some medications from overseas have the same brand name as medications sold in Australia, but they may contain different ingredients.
Be extremely careful when using an overseas product
Although the name and logo may be identical to that in Australia, overseas products may be contaminated with WADA prohibited substances that are not listed on the label.
Advice about products with conditional status
Certain products may have a ‘conditional’ status on Global DRO. A conditional status shows that the product may contain an ingredient that is prohibited in specific circumstances.
You must read the extra information provided after your search. This will explain the conditions why an ingredient is prohibited and not prohibited.
For example, Ventolin CFC-free Inhaler has a conditional status. This is because salbutamol, which is Ventolin’s active ingredient, is allowed by inhalation below a certain threshold.
