We were one of many organisations that asked WADA to change its stance on illicit drug use. This led to updates in the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code, including the creation of a Substances of Abuse category.
The Code allows more flexibility in penalties when athletes test positive in-competition for substances typically used recreationally.
These substances include Cocaine, Heroin, MDMA, and Cannabis. They are only banned during competition, not outside of it.
Testing and concentration levels
A substance is only considered a positive test if it’s found above a certain concentration set by WADA.
We only test for substances prohibited in-competition during the In-Competition period. In an Out-of-Competition environment, we can’t test for recreational drugs.
It doesn’t matter when an athlete takes illicit drugs, if they are still in your system on game day you will be penalised.
In-competition period
The in-competition period starts at 11:59pm the night before an athlete competes and ends after the competition and sample collection.
International Federations may apply to WADA for permission to change their ‘In-Competition’ period if they have compelling justification.
Some sports may have different definitions of this period. Athletes should check with their International Federation to ensure that their 'In-Competition' period aligns with the 2021 Code.
Sanctions
Athletes can face up to 4 years ban if the drug was used in-competition.
A ban can be reduced to:
- 3 months if use was out-of-competition and unrelated to performance.
- 1 month if the athlete completes a Sport Integrity Australia approved treatment plan.
Why illicit drugs are banned
Substances are banned if they meet 2 of 3 criteria:
- enhance performance
- pose health risks
- violate the spirit of sport.
Illicit drugs can cause serious health issues like heart problems, kidney failure, seizures, and addiction.
Athletes are fully responsible for any banned substance found in their body, if it was intentional or not.
Improper Use of Drugs and Medicine Policy
We have a separate Improper Use of Drugs and Medicine Policy to:
- ensure safe and lawful use of medications and supplements
- prevent illegal drug use in sport
- educe harm to athletes and the community.
