Rugby Union athlete receives 18-month sanction

Sport Integrity Australia acknowledges that Rugby Australia has imposed an 18-month period of Ineligibility on athlete Henry O’Donnell for the Presence of a Prohibited Substance/s and/or a Metabolite of a Prohibited Substance.

Mr O’Donnell returned an Adverse Analytical Finding from an In-Competition doping control test on 9 May 2025 while playing in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific – NSW Waratahs vs Queensland Reds game at Allianz Stadium, Moore Park, NSW.

Mr O’Donnell’s sample was analysed at the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory, part of the National Measurement Institute and the presence of D-Amfetamine and Methylphenidate metabolite, Ritalinic acid were detected.

D-Amfetamine is listed under Class S6.A (non-Specified Stimulants) of the World Anti-Doping Code – International Standard – Prohibited List 2025 (2025 Prohibited List). D-Amfetamine is a non-Specified Substance and is prohibited In-Competition.

The substance Methylphenidate metabolite: Ritalinic acid, is listed under Class S6.B (Specified Stimulants) and is a Specified Substance, prohibited In-Competition under the 2025 Prohibited List.

Mr O’Donnell was subject to a Mandatory Provisional Suspension from 15 September 2025 and in accordance with Article 10.13.1 of the Australian National Anti-Doping Policy 2021 (ANADP), the period of Ineligibility was backdated to account for delays not attributable to Mr O'Donnell.

Accordingly, Mr O’Donnell’s Period of Ineligibility commenced on 1 July 2025.

Any medals, points and prizes that Mr O'Donnell obtained from 9 May 2025 will also be forfeited.

Mr O’Donnell is ineligible to participate in any sports that have adopted a World Anti-Doping Code compliant anti-doping policy until 11:59pm on 31 December 2026. 

He is also not permitted to compete in a non-signatory professional league, or an event organised by a non-signatory International or National level event organisation.

Additional information on the Prohibited Substances

D-Amfetamine is a stimulant drug commonly used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Stimulant medications, such as Methylphenidate (for example Ritalin, Concerta), Dexamphetamine and Lisdexamphetamine (for example Vyvanse) are prohibited In-Competition and require a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).
