Sport Integrity Australia acknowledges that the Australian Football League (AFL) has imposed a three-year period of Ineligibility on athlete Rhys Mathieson for the Presence of a metabolite of a Prohibited Substance and the use of a Prohibited Substance.
Mr Mathieson, player for Wilston Grange Australian Football Club in the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL), returned an Adverse Analytical Finding from an In-Competition doping control test at a QAFL match between Wilston Grange and Aspley football clubs on 10 August 2024.
Mr Mathiesons’s sample was analysed at the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory, part of the National Measurement Institute, and the presence of Oxymetholone metabolite (LTM): 2z,17β-dihydroxymethyl-17α-methyl-18-nor-5α-androst-13-en-3a-ol was detected.
It was also determined that on and/or before 10 August 2024, Mr Mathieson Used Oxymetholone.
The substance Oxymetholone is listed under Class S1.1 (Anabolic Androgenic Steroids) of the World Anti-Doping Code – International Standard – Prohibited List 2024 (2024 Prohibited List). Oxymetholone is prohibited at all times and is a Non-Specified Substance.
Under Article 10.8.1 of the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code 2021 (AF Code), the Athlete has admitted to the ADRVs and accepted the proposed consequences, therefore receiving a 12-month reduction in his sanction.

In accordance with Article 8.3.3 of the AF Code and Article 9.0 of the World Anti-Doping Code – International Standard – Results Management 2023 (ISRM) the AFL have imposed a three-year period of Ineligibility on Mr Mathieson commencing on 10 August 2024.
Mr Mathieson is ineligible to participate in any sports that have adopted a World Anti-Doping Code compliant anti-doping policy between 10 August 2024 and 11:59 pm on 9 August 2027. He is also not permitted to compete in a non-signatory professional league, or event organised by a non-signatory International or National level event organisation.
Additional information on the Prohibited Substance
Oxymetholone is a potent Anabolic Androgenic Steroid (AAS). It stimulates muscle growth (anabolic) while also having a masculinising (androgenic) impact to a varying degree.
Oxymetholone is a 17α-alkyl derivative of testosterone, which decreases oxidation (breakdown) of the molecule, slowing its metabolism and allows for oral administration.
Use of Oxymetholone can lead to significant increases in muscle mass, partly due to a high level of water retention. This quick increase in muscle mass can lead to a tendon rupture from the increased load.
Oxymetholone can also be toxic to the liver, can supress anticlotting factors and can cause irreversible virilisation including deepening voice, acne and excess hair growth.
